Liverpool student landlord puts gas safety top of the New Year’s list

A Liverpool-based student housing provider is on a mission to make their homes the safest in the city thanks to ground-breaking technology.

Accommod8 has installed innovative gas safety technology from British software company – Gas Tag – that will help to keep their tenants safe.

Annual gas safety checks are a legal requirement for all landlords. However, keeping track of the paper trail for annual gas certificates, replacement boilers and new appliances for many homes presents a serious challenge for landlords.

By installing this revolutionary technology, these life-saving checks will be captured using an app on a smartphone – allowing the work to be monitored in real time – which will help keep tenants safe by assuring the quality of the work being undertaken is in line with gas safety regulations.

The concept is simple; a physical Gas Tag is placed in each property and tracks that all gas appliances and gas work is carried out by Gas Safe Registered engineers.

Each engineer is able to evidence their competency and their completed job gets uploaded to a centralised portal where the data can be monitored. Illegal gas fitters are unable to access the Gas Tag app and are not able to carry out any work through the portal.

John Blythe, director at Accommod8 said: “Tenant safety is our top priority. By installing Gas Tag in our homes, we want students and their families to rest assured that our homes are some of the safest in the city thanks to this technology.”

Stephen Ullathorne, co-founder and CEO for Gas Tag said: “We are excited to be working with such a forward-thinking company as Accommod8 that clearly puts tenant safety at the heart of what they do.”

In April, George Howarth MP tabled an Early Day Motion praising Gas Tag and calling on landlords and social housing providers to support the ‘life saving initiative’.

Liverpool Riverside Labour MP Louise Ellman said: “This is an important innovation in gas safety.”

The technology has also drawn praise from the Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Carbon Monoxide Group, Barry Sheerman MP, who said: “This is the most significant quantum leap in domestic gas safety compliance for 20 years. Gas Tag could help protect hundreds of thousands of families across the UK and ensure competent Gas Safe Register engineers undertake the work in customers’ homes.”
