Cut out the cowboys
Gas Tag has teamed up with UK home insurance companies to revolutionise the sector and help rid the industry of illegal workers.
Illegal gas work is putting lives at risk
Gas Safe Register has investigated nearly 5,000 illegal gas jobs in recent years; finding that 3 in 5 were in an unsafe condition. One in 5 jobs were so unsafe that the appliance had to be disconnected immediately.
Each year, people are needlessly put at risk of injury or death by unsafe gas appliances.Research shows that gas appliances themselves are almost never inherently unsafe. They are rendered so by poor installation and maintenance by cowboys.
Gas Tag are dedicated to working with the industry to change this.
What is Gas Tag?
Gas Tag is a free, user friendly app which can only be used by a qualified Gas Safe Registered engineer. The technology verifies – in real-time – that the engineer is Gas Safe Registered and competent to work on the appliance.
The other key component is a physical tag which is installed on the gas meter outlet pipe in a property that tracks all the gas appliances, services and installations via the app. This saves you time, reduces the risk of errors and makes it difficult for unregistered workers to carry out any work on a property.
Cutting out the cowboys
Thanks to a unique partnership model, Gas Tag is working with several leading UK insurance companies who are mandating the use of Gas Tag in 7 million homes across the UK. The tags will be free to customers through their home insurance providers.
Only Gas Safe engineers are able to carry out the work as insurance providers will only insure work through the tag. This will make the UK one of the safest countries in the world and creating the first ever independent database of gas works.
This is just the beginning as the aim is to have a Gas Tag in every home within the next three years.
This technology will make it impossible for unregistered fitters to work in any Gas Tag home – cutting out the cowboys once and for all and at the same time promoting Gas Safe Register and the services of legitimate Gas Safe registered engineers.
What does it mean for me?
Insurance companies will begin sending out Gas Tags to homeowners up and down the country over the coming months. Only Gas Safe registered engineers will be able to carry out work on any home with a Gas Tag.
